Biography of Mary Slessor

Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary who served in Nigeria and became known for her compassion, courage, and advocacy for vulnerable children. She lived among the Efik people, learned their language, and gained deep respect for her willingness to embrace local culture.

Slessor used hymns translated into Efik during worship gatherings and encouraged local believers to develop their own musical expressions of faith. She also used simple catechisms and Bible stories to teach new converts and strengthen community worship.

She collaborated closely with local women, chiefs, and mission workers who supported her efforts to protect children and promote education.
