Biography of Paul Gerhardt

Paul Gerhardt was a German Lutheran pastor and hymn writer whose texts expressed deep faith, emotional honesty, and trust in God. His hymns became central to German devotional life.

His hymns include O Sacred Head Now Wounded, If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee, and All My Heart This Night Rejoices.

Gerhardt collaborated with composer Johann Cruger, who provided tunes for many of his texts and helped spread their use in worship.
